
Womans Suffrage-The Right to Vote
-Throughout history women have been treated unfairly. Men have always had the upper hand in everything. Women were confined to the house and the role of housewife and mother. In the 19th century women started to take and stand and campaign for their rights.
- Beginning in 1838, Kentucky authorized women to vote in school elections.
- In 1887, Kansas granted women unlimited voting rights in municipal elections.
- In 1869 the Wyoming Territory gave women suffrage rights on an equal basis with men and continued the practice following admission to the statehood.
- By 1900, women had gained the right to vote in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.
- In 1907 the Equality League of Self-Supporting Women was founded by Harriot Stanton. In 1910 it was renamed the Womens Political Union.
- By 1914, 10 other states had joined in giving the right to vote to women, including Nevada and Montana.
- Vigorous campaigning brought Congress the proposal for the 19th Amendment and necessary state ratifications in 1914.
- The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920.
